Does anyone know how to prevent algae from growing in standing water?

I have had it happen in humidity trays for orchids in the past and I just bought a fishbowl shaped candle holder in which you can put items (like pebbles or shells) in water inside the bowl and the candle holder rests on top. Just wondering if there was an additive (like maybe salt or possibly ammonia) that could be put in the water to hinder the process of algae growth in these items. It’s yucky and it’s a pain to scrub off! Thanks!

Snails. They do the work for you. Ever few days, all you need to do is put a few goldfish pellets.

You cant buy snails at an aquirmum store, but you can buy aquatic plants that always seem to have a few snails on them, just a small warning…..the snails multiply faster than rabbits, expect alot of them. OR just buy a big gold fish to put in there to eat most of the snails, the snails and goldfish and plants would look awesome in your fishbowlshaped candel holder.

If it is not big enough for all of that, I would say just change the water often, I dont know what kind of finish the bowl has, I would not want to ruin it by using chlorine to keep the water clean.
