How does a wrist strap with static work against?

What should I put the alligator clip to? anti-static carpet, so I can connect the alligator clip to? i attached the alligator clips to the bare metal parts of my team is that you can? I'm thinking wrong to keep the bracelet attached poorly connected to the computer and the carpet attached to a desk leg .. will that work? What should I do?
