Why subway cars in New York pulled into the ocean?

I have seen documentaries and recordings of it and they seem stupid. All Metal body that can be recycled for steel products requiring lower quality.

Not sure about this in particular, but I know that some structures such as trams (usually small vessels) sank provision of artificial reefs. They attract all kinds of fish and corals, etc, and are really good for the ocean, in addition to providing sites for divers to go. To do this just to throw them away would be a waste. To an artificial reef – a very good idea.
