Prodigy Spring
Im interested in every damn thing!!!! HOW DO I CHOOSE?

Well..my problem is that I plan to start school next Spring or Fall and I am at a complete loss as to what my major should be. Here is a list of things I have a true prodigy and interest in and could see myself pursuing.
Business Administration/ Management; Journalism; Philosophy; Political Science; Biology; Fashion/ Interior Design; Choreography; Early Childhood Education and I’m sure a few others I can’t remember right off.

So what I need to know is how can I narrow it down when I can see myself doing all those things? Is there not a major that touches on almost all subjects? Does anyone know of any tips or websites I could use to help me out? I’m really in dire straights because I do not want to go through changing majors and all that bull. I want to be as sure as possible. Tanx!
HELP…..please.

Okay, don’t panic so badly. One of the great things about college is that you can explore almost anything with the right plan.

First, do you have any experience with what you’re interested in? If you’re interested in journalism, have you volunteered with yearbook or with your paper, or have you been the reporter/photographer for a club? That kind of thing..

Second, think about where you see yourself in 10 years. If you see yourself doing something in particular that makes you happy, take the path that leads you there. If you aren’t interested in teaching, for instance, philosophy may not be the right way to go, and if you’re not interested in law school, maybe not political science.

Just a note–most people change their majors several times through their college career. Don’t blow a gasket because you think you haven’t picked right from the first. Also, depending on what career you choose, almost any major will work. For instance, if you go into fashion design, a business degree would help you immensely to run your business. You can also look into double majoring: anything coupled with a business degree should prepare you pretty well for most things, even if there aren’t that many jobs in the field you choose. You can also minor in up to two (usually) different degrees; for example, an early childhood education degree with a minor in biology or philosophy would fit nicely. Most degree programs, especially business, have electives built in so you can take classes in other fields to see if you like them. Usually, at least one sociology/humanities class is required (so you can look into economics for business or another class for philosophy, which is usually humanities). Also, political science, some kind of writing class, and at least introductory biology are usually required for a bachelor’s degree. You should check at the schools you’re thinking of applying to to see if they give you that broad scope of classes.

You should also look into the programs at the schools you’re looking at attending; call or have your parent/friend call and set an appointment up with the school to tour the department and talk first-hand with the faculty or a career counselor. Knowing exactly what you’re getting into with each one will help, especially since something like a biology major will be much harder to achieve in than a business major (something to think about if you have to hold down a job), whereas a fashion/interior design curriculum will be much more competitive than an early childhood education degree.

Good luck! Think it through, and don’t just follow your head, follow your heart to find what makes you happiest!
