Great fuel economy, more security?

I'm looking for a new car (coupe or sedan) and fuel economy and safety are the major factors decision for me. Any suggestion of a great car that combines the two exceptionally well?

I have a honda civic and put a great gas mileage, I just got rear ended by a diesel engine and was fairly well.
