What weight of paper should I buy?

I have been selling stationery for almost a quarter century, and the question I hear most often is: "What weight is this paper? "This question may seem simple but the answer may be quite confusing. The direct comparison is surprisingly difficult. Hopefully, I can do this easier for you to ignore all the technical terms and focusing on the types of documents of interest to the average consumer print DIY.

There are different varieties of paper and each has its own means of weight reference. A printer can try to sell you a job with a 50 # offset, which implies that the use of 20 # bond would result in an inferior product. But for all practical purposes, 20 and 50 bond # # are the same displacement.

Commercial printers are usually the only ones interested in the technical information on weights and types of paper. The electronic edition of the average consumer needs require more than a few simple rules. The paper used for desktop publishing, also called stationery design, comes in bonds and cover weight.

The name "Bond" book has been added to the confusion. I'll explain that later. Regardless, the average consumer cares little for the multitude of types of paper. Just worry about the terms of compensation, the label and the index if you plan on keeping a printer for your project. Normally we do not find these items and reduce the size of sheet. When you buy paper in a retail store in order to print for yourself, you will find often limited their bond options and cover weights. The bond paper weight is usually 20 to 32 # #, while the paperback is only available in 65 #. I like use the table below when comparing the paper weight.

equivalent weights are simply the weight in this table. By using equivalent weights, we can compare the different types of paper, but its real basis weights may be different.

The basis weight of a document is actually the weight of 500 sheets, measured in pounds the size of a matrix document sheet. The parent of the same size of the sheet is not used to all the papers.

Bond paper is defined in the dictionary as:
1. Rag content paper is used originally for bonds and bank notes.
2. The highest quality grade of paper that can be used for documentation, letterheads, etc.

The term bond paper has become the generic term for high-quality paper in cut sheet sizes as 11 "x17" or Letter Size, which is sold in reams of 500 sheets each. Usually, the designer's role is in 25 or 100 sheet packs.

Designer Stationery refers to paper pre-printed designs. From your home or office, you can design your own message and then print to the printer or copier. Designer Stationery can be used with most laser, plain paper copiers and inkjet on the market.

What is commonly known as cardstock is actually 65 # cover weight paper. This is normally sold at retail in reams of flyers or Business Cards or by mail. The type of paper used for printing at home invitations is 65 # cover.

I hope I have presented all this in a much more understandable to have a lot of technical terminology out of the discussion. All this must have felt much better the next time you go shopping if you just take mine equivalent weight of paper.
