falling horse every time he canters?

i rescued an appendix ex reiner last month. he is 23. the former owner said he fell to his knees when transitioning to a trot from a walk. we have been suplimenting him for 30 days now and he seemed to be getting his spunk back. today i was going to walk him on the lunge line he immediatly went to a gallop fell on even ground and is now limping. i padded his stall and wrapped the leg. his knee is swelling but not hot. he is only for my son as light riding leasure horse to help build his confidence. im so upset and my son is devistated, what can we do to keep this from happening again. is there anything we can do? will his knees be the end of him?
im not an idiot my son is not riding him now. when he arrived he had the prospect to be a confidence builder because of his age and disposition. he absolutly loves my son and visa versa. the vet had me wrap and watch it until monday unless things get worse.

He sounds like he has nerve damange.. He would make a good pasture pony, but not a riding horse:((
