Can a green card holder legally change their name in the US before becoming a citizen?

We have a rather long last name. My husband is from India and he had no idea about choosing a last name etc when he came here. So he chose a family name. I am also a green card holder. We live in NY.
We now have children and the name is over 13 letters long and is very difficult to pronounce. We’d like to shorten the name to the first 6 letters.
