Why build your own model KPI

The short answer is in the "O" word. If you do you own it.

And you will use it, because what you think. More importantly, you can change when you change your business, and in the current environment, you can be sure that will change your business.

Over the years I have been working with KPI models, I used two techniques, and one worked 4 times, as well as the other. The powerful technique was to teach people develop their own model, almost without exception became productivity and business performance. The best results were for large organizations when a joint management team learned how to do it together. When the CEO of operators and supervisors work together all learned something new about the company and the quality of decisions of everyday life better, almost like magic. Supervisors learned their daily decisions affecting the profitability of the business. The CEO learned about issues affected supervisors worked with the rest of the company. Together they were able to reduce the number and impact of unintended consequences.

The second was when the client said: "Michael, I'm too busy. You do it and show me how to use it." This worked, albeit more slowly, but it took months and the level of understanding across the company was rarely achieved in full. My client is still impressive results, but it took a lot more effort and supervision.

Why is this so?

A KPI model is not only a spreadsheet.

A KPI model is our enterprise level, and it describes the complex interrelationships between different parts of the business. It is shown in a graphical format how the different parts Company interact, and the effect on the outcome, our ROfE (return on resources used) changes in response to different decisions.

Most of us are familiar with the idea of mental models or maps of the world, which govern our personal decision-making processes, often at subconscious. We have been building our own model, from early childhood spirit, and has a powerful influence on how they react to situations. If the information we get is not consistent (or compatible) with our model of mind, we reject the information. If our mental map is not consistent with the real world we are forced to commit errors. So we need to keep these three things consistent, and work together.

It's the same for our business.

  • Our shared map mind the business needs to be consistent with our information system,
  • Our mental map of the company must be consistent with the business of which we operate,
  • All decision-makers need a common understanding of how we respond to situations.

In other words, all decision makers should be doing their bit with the same model. What model? The best work is a model of KPI. And the quickest way reach a common understanding is that they develop together.

But I'm a businessman ….

….. I know how run my business. Of course, but always make the right decisions. If you optimize the performance of your business? Does your accounting system provide information you need to keep track of where you are in?

Trying to run a business without a KPI model is like trying to navigate through an ocean without a chart. The compass tells you what course you are on, but not the right way? A mentor will help you follow the right path, but a mentor is not your letter of the company. If you identify your own three or four drivers of business performance and track, the better the results. The best way is to build your own KPI model.
