Will holding up a fairly strong bookend magnet up to old tape back ups make them unreadable?

I’ve got some old old computer backup tapes that might have old emails to old flames on them, but I no longer have the antiquated backup system, so I was wondering if doing the thing they did on “Fight Club” will make these magnetic tapes unreadable?
I could burn them but that would not help the environment. The tape does make attractive ribboning for presents, but I don’t give THAT many presents.

yep..that will do it. Use a circular motion over the tapes, it will wipe them clean.
