How long Does a HIGH CAPACITY 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery Last?

How many hours does the battery last fully charged?

Are you talking lifetime or how many hours of run time on a charge? The other person who answered before is incorrect to a great extent. Lifetime is determined by the number of charge discharge cycles. A typical lithium battery will last 800-1000 cycles. A cycle is 100% discharge followed by 100% charge. Any combination works, such as 50% discharge followed by a recharge constitutes 1/2 cycle. A 25% discharge followed by a recharge is 1/4 cycle. Get the picture? ALL lithium batteries have a rigid control for both charge and discharge. While true that multiple celled batteries can be damaged if taken to complete discharge, 0 volts, the circuitry built in to ALL lithium batteries that I know of prevents going to zero and shuts off the current when the cells reach approximately 90% discharge, and the cells can stay in this mostly dead condition for many months without any damage. Lithium cells are unique in this. The problem is, cells without protection can be totally RUINED if simply overcharged for a few minutes! So, manufacturers added the safety circuitry to protect the expensive lithium batteries. If the circuitry is not built in to the batteries, it is built in to the device that uses the batteries. Haven’t you ever wondered why it is no rechargeable lithium cells are made in the common AAA, AA, C or D cell sizes? Now, as to how long a charge lasts… two things determine this, time on the shelf before use and current drain while IN use. A battery is like a bank account with a fixed vale. You can only withdraw so much until it is empty. If I withdraw at a lower rate, it takes more hours, higher rate, then fewer hours. Each cell within the battery has a fixed capacity. In my laptop, with a 6 cell battery, each cell has a capacity of 2.2 ampere hours. The cells are connected in series which means the battery has approximately 18 volts. When running, my laptop draws about 200 milliamperes when on the battery, meaning I’ll get about 10 hours of running time at most. 10 hours at 200 MA = 2 ampere hours. Remember, the battery will shut off on low voltage, so I can not get out the total 2.2 ampere hours the cells are rated at. By the way, “high capacity” is a nebulous term. The original battery in my laptop was rated at 1.4 ampere hours which got me about 6 hours of run time, and the high capacity battery I have NOW is the same physical size but is rated at 2.2 ampere hours. Instead of ampere-hours, you MAY see a battery rated in WATTS or WATT-HOURS and there is some confusion as to what the manufacturer MEANS by watts or watt-hours. The ones I’ve seen with watts do not match the current capacity or voltage to BE watts as I know them. Watts are simply voltage times current, and watt-hours are voltage times current times TIME. The original 1.4 AH battery cost about $50. The newer 2.2 AH battery I have now cost $70. And yes, I have a spare on the charger.
