How can I make my lightbulb project work?

Ok. So, I have a project where I need to make a lightbulb using copper wire, D batteries, ajnd a filament. I used electric tape to keep the batteries and wire on the together. I used screws to wrap the wire around. So my question is, what should i use as a filament? I can’t find iron wire, i tried aluminum, and a nail. I don’t let anything touch the wood (wires ect) but it wont work. all i get is smoke from the hot wire. I get no light because I cant find a good filament and how to place it!!!

Thomas Edison spent years, with a laboratory with many assistants, working on this same problem. As did several of his predecessors.

You can’t repeat what he did with limited time, limited resources.
