Erase Student Boards

Promote WGS program?

I am currently a sophomore WGS and psychology double major who served in the college student forum WGS our program. What are some ways the board can promote WGS on campus and the students involved (perhaps enough to become greater or minor) in the program? Also, how can we work to erase the stigma of a program such as WGS, and win more support from school staff and administration? Thanks!

Good on you for doing this! I have two degrees in the field, and I know what you mean about the difficulty in the promotion and stigma. There is a movement underway to remove programs that have "outlived their usefulness" – however, if students are studying GWS are exactly the same things in any other program, only from the point of view, how can they not be relevant? From my perspective, interdisciplinarity WS should be promoted. That's what I got into the field. Having teachers come to school events in general and give brief discussions on what they are doing. Some of the research on GWS is impressive. I particularly liked the history of women, like years ago had no idea women were doing it, but was well aware of what the men were making history. When I was studying, I was trying the same thing, so he started a newsletter throughout the campus. That was quite successful. Keep a few nights movies and see movies like In the Company of Men or Hotel Rwanda or where you live the Spirit … and then have discussions about them, moderated by the GWS power. Make sure that any event you're holding does not use the terminology that is going to put people off – it takes time for people to embrace these things, so even in your language. We want men. We want the anti-feminist women there. This is to educate people, and preach to the converted is a waste of time, so we need to get the misconceptions that may become mobilized to clarify about the program. Establish an online site for people to express GWS your thoughts … and indeed the direction that are either positive or negative. Invite people into categories such as women and literature so you can see that, well, we are studying the literature, but we are focusing on women. I'm not sure if some people never get it, but I'm very happy to see that being so active in trying to expand the perception of GWS. All the best to you! Good luck in your studies!
