Understanding How Microsoft Excel Builds Lists
Excel Chart Wizard and documentation use several graphic terms: the data markers, the position data
descriptions, legend, chart text, plot area and chart area.
It is helpful to understand exactly what these words and phrases mean, so the bullet list that follows includes definitions.
Data markers
Data markers are the graphical elements used to represent the individual values of data point
on a graph. In the case of a graph lines, for example, uses symbols Excel uses, or points on a line to show the values of data points. These symbols or points are the data markers.
Other types of charts in Excel using data markers. A chart that uses columns or bars, for example, has column or bar data markers. A graph circular slice of cake has data markers, and so on.
Marker data descriptions
Excel typically describes and classifies data markers using marker data descriptions, such as scales of the axes and data labels.
Different types of use charts different descriptions of location information. Bar, column, line graphs and use axis scales. Pie and donut charts using data labels.
Legend
A legendary name and identifies the data series you've drawn. In the case of a pie chart, for example, the legend usually names data series and then also shows the colors used for the slices of cake.
The charts show multiple data series, the legend shows all data sets and visually table shows viewers how to identify the data series.
Table text
text box predictable describes a graph or part of a chart. A table can include a title that shares the message of success as industry continues to grow " or a subtitle that clarifies a few bits of information about the letter "(forecast for five years of domestic revenues).
Plot area
The plot area of a board is the area that contains data markers and descriptions of the position data.
In many maps, plot area is a rectangle that shows the lines and scales to represent the plot
area.
In the same cases – such as a pie chart or rings of success —- the circle shows the slices of cake and data labels that identify the slices of cake up the plot area.
Area Chart
The chart area includes plot area, the graphic text, and a legend. In other words, the chart area represents the whole enchilada.
