Condolences, flowers, guest book signature and sympathy or mass card for very dear Uncle’s funeral services?
How much is too much? I would appreciate an answer from someone who has lost a dear one so they can tell me what is appropriate. I sent flowers to the funeral parlor from me and my siblings, signed the guest book on line and will be attending the wake, funeral services, including the mass and military services at the cemetery. Should I also put a sympathy or mass card in the envelope holder/pedestal at the funeral parlor or does the guest book signature on line kind of take the place of giving a card at the funeral home?
The services should have a physical guest book which is signed by the physical guests. The family takes that home and looks at it later. So you dont need to put a card at the funeral home. Sending flowers already triggers a response in the uncle’s family (they have to send you a thankyou note) and just signing the book means they don’t have to thank you again.
I like having the book and I like reviewing the memorials. Lots of times instead of sending flowers, people send a donation to a charity – anything from VFW to church to environmental group. They enclose the check in a note that says “please accept this in honor of dear uncle, and notify Aunt Mary Smith, 123 Smith Street, Smithtown.” Then the family gets a preprinted note from the charity that tells everything except the amount of the gift.
