Is it illegal to build on state land?
You probably know the answer to this, but if there is a forest that is on state land in the middle of nothing, it is illegal to use? It is miles from any civilization. I have camped there several times and have not seen a single human being out there all year have been there. Located in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. All I want is to build a small log cabin that I and my friends can stay home and not get wet when it rains. Nothing fancy. Only then can we stay there and fish for a week at a time. I do not take any of the natural products. Only I want to use fallen trees and other things.
Yes, it is illegal to build on federal lands or state. It is also illegal to cut trees on public land without permission. Sometimes the responsible agency will issue a permit for a cabin or a permanent camp. As Patrick suggested, contact the state forest land management service or federal agency having jurisdiction in the area.
